I'm obsessed with anything that has to do with circus sideshows! All of the old gaffs are so fascinating. A Fiji mermaid is the torso and head of a juvenile monkey sewn to the back half of a fish. It was billed as a mummified mermaid found in some exotic land. I always wanted one, but juvenile monkeys are hard to come by in my area, so I made my own! No monkeys or fish were harmed, it is mostly wire, clay, carpet latex, and plaster.
Every time you're swimming in a lake or the ocean and something touches your leg I'm pretty sure this is what it is.
I acquired a great deal of knowledge and inspiration from U.K. based artist Dan Baines. His Feejee Mermaid tutorial is super detailed, and I used a lot of his techniques in my own sculpture. His work is amazing, I am such a fan!
